These Bizarre Details About Will And Jada Prove They’re Hollywood’s Most Unconventional Couple

It seems that Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith have always had an unconventional relationship. And because they’re in the spotlight so much, everyone gets to observe the ups and downs of their marriage. The couple sometimes set the record straight via Jada’s show Red Table Talk. But even if you watch it religiously, you still might not know all these things.

1. Jada was pregnant when the couple wed

A couple of years into the couple’s relationship, Jada discovered she was pregnant with Jaden. And her mother Adrienne insisted the couple got married. The chat show host recalled to People magazine in 2019 that her mom “called Will and cried her freaking eyes out, so then I had to have a wedding and that was infuriating.”

2. There were rumors about Jada and Marc Anthony

In 2011, rumors spread that Jada was cheating on Will with musician Marc Anthony. In order to quell the gossip, the Smiths ended up releasing a statement to People magazine. It read, “Although we are reluctant to respond to these types of press reports, the rumors circulating about our relationship are completely false. We are still together, and our marriage is intact.”

3. Will was bold when asking Jada out

After Will divorced his first wife, he decided to contact Jada and ask her out. He told the story on a 2018 Red Table Talk, and it goes like this: When his future wife informed him she wasn’t seeing anybody, the star smoothly responded with “Cool, you’re seeing me now.” It was a risky move, but it worked like a charm.

4. Will makes Jada laugh


In a 2010 interview with the Bay State Banner newspaper, Jada was asked, “When was the last time you had a good laugh?” She answered, “Oh, I laugh hard every day. I mean, my husband is Will Smith! I’m telling you, that’s one of the joys of being married to him. My life is full of laughter because of that man.”

5. Jada auditioned to be Will’s Fresh Prince girlfriend

Will and Jada met for the very first time back in 1997, when she auditioned to play his romantic interest on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. 6. Jada once had a sex addiction


In a July 2018 episode of Red Table Talk Jada revealed a little-known fact about herself. She once had a very specific mental health issue. As the host told her co-stars and the cameras, “When I was younger, I definitely think I had a sex addiction of some kind, yes, that everything could be fixed by sex.”

7. The couple have described their relationship in an unusual way

During a 2010 Oprah interview, the couple said they created a “marriage business plan” for themselves. Will explained, “If you don’t have a purpose for your relationship, if you don’t have a place that you’re going, something that you want to accomplish, something that you want to do, you can really get lost in the murk of the journey.” And Jada also considered the Smiths, “a family business.”

8. The wedding was very private


When Will and Jada married in 1997, they were absolutely determined that the paparazzi wouldn’t be there. So devoted were they to keeping their wedding a secret that they didn’t even tell the guests where the ceremony was taking place. Instead they put them up in a hotel, hired limos and told everyone to follow directions given to them in an envelope.

When Will wed Jada, he had already been married once and had a child, Trey, from that first union. Jada considers Trey her “bonus son” and has refers to him as such in Instagram posts. The two appear to have a very close bond. And in 2018 Trey made his own Instagram post where he called his mother and stepmother “two angels.”

11. Will was a fan of Jada before marrying her

From 1991 to 1993 Jada played Lena James in the TV sitcom A Different World. Will happened to watch the show and he very much liked what he saw. In a October 2018 episode of Red Table Talk he told Jada, “I knew there was something in our energy that would be magic.” But at the time, the star was still married.

12. Will once took Jada skydiving


In 2019 the former musician premiered a new show, Will Smith’s Bucket List. Right at the beginning he announced, “My wife made the mistake of telling me that she would do whatever I wanted for my birthday. And then what I told her was that I wanted her to skydive with me.” The whole family ended up throwing themselves out of a plane, apart from an incredulous Willow.

13. Jada was involved with another man while still married – allegedly with Will’s blessing

In 2020 it shockingly transpired that Jada had been seeing singer August Alsina while still married. When Will was interviewed for Ebony magazine in 1996, he discussed one of the things that drew him to his wife. He said, “My number one attraction to Jada is intellectual. The teenager told her shocked mother, “I was going downstairs to get some juice and I saw for a little moment and I ran away. I was like, ‘Oh my God, this is so crazy. What did I just see?’”

28. Will told Jada he would quit trying to make her happy


During the fallout from the Alsina affair, an old 2018 Instagram video of Will resurfaced. In it he said, “Whether or not a person is happy is deeply and totally and utterly out of your control… I literally said to Jada, ‘That’s it. I retire. I retire from trying to make you happy. I need you to go make yourself happy and just prove to me that it’s even possible.’”

29. The couple don’t say they’re married

During a 2018 interview for the Rap Radar podcast, Will revealed that he and Jada, “don’t even say we’re married anymore. Alsina then asked for the host’s help recovering and gradually it turned into a romance. Jada had experience in that area as her mother had also fought a drug problem.

Eight years after the fact, Will recalled on Red Table Talk how awful 2010 had been for him. He said, “There was a period where [Jada] woke up and cried 45 days straight. I started keeping a diary. It was every morning. I think that’s the worst I’ve ever felt in our marriage. I was failing miserably, but on the outside I was winning.”

Will and Jada ended up splashing some of their movie star money on a truly spectacular home. The lakeside Calabasas house, where Red Table Talk is filmed, has many luxurious features. And they include a basketball court, a meditation lounge, nine bedrooms, a recording studio and a movie theater among other things.

34. Will got angry when Jada swore


Because of Will’s own upbringing, he found some aspects of his marriage very difficult. During a 2018 Red Table Talk episode, the star admitted that he had always vowed never to create “a house, a space, an interaction with a person where there’s profanity and violence.” Thus when Jada swore at him on one occasion, he told his future wife they’d split up if she continued to talk like that.

35. Jada has had incidents with Will’s fans

As an A-list movie star, Will naturally gets a lot of attention from women. In a May 2019 Red Table Talk episode Jada revealed how she handled that situation. She recalled, “There was only like one or two times where I might have gotten a little hostile where I felt like people stepped over a boundary and they were disrespectful.”

36. Jada thought she “didn’t know” her husband


When Jada self-isolated with Will in 2020, things got difficult. In April of that year she said on Red Table Talk, “One of the things I realize is that I don’t know Will at all… You’re forced to look at things differently.” However, she also added, “The thing that Will and I are learning to do is be friends.”

37. Will felt that Jada was “ungrateful”

When Will appeared on his 2018 Red Table Talk episode, Adrienne asked her son-in-law, “Did you ever feel like Jada was ungrateful?” And the star perhaps surprisingly answered, “Hell yeah.” But as their marriage progressed, he learned that assumption was incorrect. On the show the star admitted, “[Jada] was sacrificing herself to fit my picture.”

38. Jada didn’t really want to get married


In June 2019 Jada revealed to People magazine, “I never wanted to get married. But my mother was like, ‘You have to get married’ – she’s so old school – and Will wanted a family. So I said, ‘All right, maybe it’s something I should do.’” Yet she even cried tears of anger on her wedding day.

39. Will and Jada named their kids after themselves

This detail seems obvious once you realize it. Will and Jada gave their children their own first names, just gender-switched. So Will became Willow and Jada became Jaden. 40. Will and Jada have been to marriage counseling


Will told The Sun newspaper in 2016 that he and Jada had been to relationship counseling, and it saved their relationship. He said, “What happens in a marriage once you do counseling, the truth comes out… For me it’s the dark before the dawn.
